On 14 September, SHINE’s CEO Carina Dantas was in Brussels for the 1st Management Committee meeting and kick-off of the European Legal Design (ELDA) COST Action.
A COST Action is a four-year, interdisciplinary research network that brings together scientists, innovators, and sector experts from across Europe and globally to investigate a topic of their choice.
Starting bottom-up, and drawing on advances in AI, interactive tools, and plain language, ELDA applies legal design to make existing laws and regulations more accessible, sustainable, and effective for people, small and medium-sized enterprises, and authorities. In parallel, it aims to improve top-down policy and lawmaking, ensuring that future laws and guidance are designed with clarity, usability, and compliance in mind from the outset.
Particularly interested in the Action’s intersection with AI and digital tools, plain language, co-creation and inclusive approaches, Carina Dantas says “making complex information genuinely understandable and usable is not only a matter of better communication, it is fundamental to participation, trust, equity and effective implementation”.
The ELDA community met in person, exchanged perspectives, and started shaping the work that will take it through the coming four years.
SHINE looks forward to contributing to the network, bringing perspectives on human-centred innovation, ethical AI, stakeholder engagement and co-creation, and learning from colleagues across Europe.
