SHINE 2Europe shared its work on cancer-related initiatives in a webinar attended by around 350 participants. The meeting, entitled “European funding opportunities in the field of cancer”, took place on 2 May and was organised by AICIB – Agência de Investigação Clínica e Inovação Biomédica (Agency for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation) and the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Health on European funding opportunities in the field of cancer.
Carina Dantas, SHINE’s CEO, gave special prominence to the Liveration project, funded under Mission Cancer, as well as RadioVal (Horizon Europe), of which the company is a partner.
The Liveration project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Additional Margin Coagulation (AMC) in real-life scenarios after liver surgery. Its ultimate goal is to reduce the likelihood of liver cancer recurrence by conducting a pragmatic clinical trial in 6 countries, involving 720 patients. In this project, SHINE is responsible for the social, economic, health and comparative effectiveness evaluation of the intervention. It also co-ordinated the mapping and involvement of relevant actors in the field, following a Social Innovation approach.
In the case of RadioVal, also funded by the same programme, the aim is to validate an artificial intelligence solution to support breast cancer treatment decisions. In this project, SHINE is leading the dialogue with doctors, patients, artificial intelligence (AI) researchers, ethics and legal officials and other experts, in order to understand the exact needs of all stakeholders.
In terms of the EU4Health Programme, a total budget of around 118 million euros is available for 2025, with several opportunities available for this year in the area of cancer, namely in terms of Action Grants and Joint Actions.
The Cancer Mission offers an opportunity to all scientists and companies involved in cancer-related research and the Horizon Europe Cancer Mission work programme includes six topics of proposals for 2024, with a submission deadline of 18 September. This information was shared during the webinar and calls were made for new ideas and projects to be submitted.
