SHINE 2Europe’s CEO Carina Dantas participated at the EOSC4Cancer stakeholder workshop, held on December 2nd, to present innovative approaches addressing ethical challenges in cancer data sharing. The event brought together over 30 stakeholders and partners in Brussels, both in-person and online, for the Roadmap Consultation Workshop on the Cancer Data Space.
Carina Dantas delivered a presentation titled “Clustering Biases – The Role of Stakeholders and Data Platforms,” highlighting SHINE 2Europe’s significant contributions to the fight against cancer research. Drawing from her expertise and work, Carina Dantas showcased SHINE’s involvement in key European projects such as RadioVal and Liveration, emphasizing the work on social innovation and multi-stakeholder engagement.
RadioVal, a project focused on the clinical validation of radiomics AI for breast cancer treatment planning, exemplifies one pioneering approach. In this initiative, SHINE leads the multi-stakeholder engagement and social innovation work, crafting methodologies to bring together patients, healthcare professionals, AI developers, ethicists, and policymakers. Carina’s presentation underscored the trust and validation challenges inherent in current AI models, advocating for more robust real-world validation and fostering trust between healthcare providers and patients.
The Liveration project was also presented and discussed. This project aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Additional Margin Coagulation (AMC) in liver surgery to reduce cancer recurrence. SHINE’s role concerns evaluating the social, economic, and health impacts of the intervention while coordinating the mapping and engagement of relevant stakeholders. Carina outlined the project’s challenges, such as regulatory compliance, data standardisation, and multilingual communication barriers, shedding light on the complexities of conducting a pragmatic clinical trial involving 720 patients across six countries.
Beyond these projects, Carina highlighted SHINE 2Europe’s contributions to the cancer community in numerous Horizon Europe initiatives, illustrating how SHINE bridges research, policy, and patient empowerment. Her involvement in endeavors such as ECHoS, 4P-CAN, and the Portuguese National Cancer Hub exemplifies the dedication to fostering inclusive, evidence-based approaches to cancer prevention and care.
The workshop also provided an opportunity to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including patients, industry representatives, policymakers, and researchers. Carina’s participation in a session alongside notable experts such as Marco Morelli, Peter Gordebeke, David Marshall, Chloé Mayeur, Oriana Sousa and Tamara Milagre enriched the discussions on cancer data sharing, ethics, and the development of synergistic projects. The collaborative atmosphere underscored the importance of integrating multiple perspectives to advance the Cancer Data Space Roadmap.
