Pink October: SHINE’s commitment to the fight against cancer

October is the month internationally dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer, a disease that affects millions of women around the world. In this context, SHINE 2Europe has stood out for its involvement in innovative projects aimed at improving the quality of life and treatment of cancer patients. Led by CEO Carina Dantas, SHINE plays a key role in initiatives that use technology to transform the cancer treatment landscape.

Highlights include the RadioVal project, an initiative funded by Horizon Europe, in which SHINE has collaborated with 15 other international partners to study how artificial intelligence (AI) can improve breast cancer treatment, focusing on predicting the response to preoperative chemotherapy.

In addition, SHINE is also part of Medi-CaSE, a COST Action that aims to implement a cancer screening and early diagnosis network in the Mediterranean, which will have its launch meeting on October 24 in Brussels, with the participation of Carina Dantas as a member of the Management Committee representing Portugal.

Another important project is LIVERATION, which focuses on the treatment of liver cancer, another type of cancer with a global impact. SHINE takes a leading role in multisectoral involvement, ensuring that the solutions developed are adapted to the needs of patients and healthcare professionals.

Carina Dantas, SHINE’s CEO, is deeply involved in several European initiatives dedicated to oncology. In addition to being a co-investigator on the EUonQoL – Quality of Life in Oncology project, which is developing a unified European tool for assessing the quality of life of cancer patients, Carina is a member of the survivors’ group of the Portuguese National Cancer Hub and serves on several advisory boards of international projects, such as JANE (Joint Action Network of Expertise on Cancer), 4P-CAN, which promotes personalized cancer prevention, and CINDERELLA, which uses AI to support treatment decisions for breast cancer patients.

This Pink October, SHINE is reinforcing its commitment to the fight against cancer, underlining the importance of research, innovation and collaboration between different sectors to offer more effective diagnoses and treatments. The global awareness campaign highlights the urgency of supporting initiatives that improve patients’ quality of life and bring society closer to a healthier and more promising future for all.
