On 24 February 2026, the Patient AI Treatment Hub (PATH) project officially launched through an online kick-off, bringing together 23 partners from 10 European countries to advance cancer care through the responsible use of artificial intelligence and secure health data sharing. Carina Dantas, Lucia Thielman and Harm op den Akker represented SHINE during the kick-off.
Funded by the Innovative Health Initiative Joint Undertaking under Horizon Europe, PATH aims to improve early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term patient outcomes by integrating AI tools into clinical workflows. A key focus is overcoming the fragmentation of health data through a federated, privacy-preserving infrastructure that enables secure data exchange while safeguarding patient privacy.
At the core of the project is the development of an AI-powered platform supporting clinicians with more precise and personalised decision-making. Pilot studies across Europe will validate its impact on clinical outcomes, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
SHINE will lead Work Package 2, focusing on state-of-the-art analysis and use case definition, while also supporting communication and dissemination, the establishment of an expert community, and impact measurement activities.
By combining technological innovation with strong stakeholder engagement and ethical governance, PATH contributes to a more connected, data-driven, and patient-centred approach to cancer care, aligned with Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the European Health Data Space.
