Preparing for a journey towards environmental sustainability, the city of Coimbra is opening its doors to a Joint Session of the OneAquaHealth and GreenerAge Projects. Scheduled for November 8, 2023, this event will take place at the Old Water Pumping Station of the City Park (Water Museum) between 09h00 and 13h00. The University of Coimbra, through its Centre for Marine and Environmental Sciences (MARE), and SHINE 2Europe are the organizers of this session where the 2nd meeting of the Local Alliance of Stakeholders of the OneAquaHealth project will take place.
OneAquaHealth, coordinated by UC-MARE and of which SHINE is a partner, is a Horizon Europe-funded project that aims to promote the use of environmental observations to help shape policies on the health of human and aquatic ecosystems in urban environments. To this end, the project is collaborating with local actors in five European research pilots. Together, they will, among other things, develop an environmental monitoring system, based on artificial intelligence, that supports decision-making with a view to recovering and protecting these ecosystems, as well as implementing citizen science hubs in five cities: Coimbra, Toulouse, Oslo, Benevento and Ghent.
After convening its Coimbra Stakeholders Alliance in September, bringing together 7 regional organizations: Coimbra City Council (Environment Department), ARS Centro, Eugénio de Castro School Group (Solum and Solum-Sul), Centro Estudos Sociais (Proj. URBINAT), Cáritas Diocesana de Coimbra, Coimbra Coolectiva and Águas de Coimbra, this consortium will hold its second meeting in this joint session with these and more regional players who will contribute to the development of the project over the coming years.
The Coimbra Local Alliance is still accepting partners committed to managing health, urban aquatic ecosystems or contributing to the well-being of citizens. SHINE 2Europe will also be holding the multiplier event for its GreenerAge Project, funded by the European Commission’s Erasmus+ program, which aims to foster environmental literacy among adults 55+, encouraging them to adopt more sustainable behaviors and promoting more active citizenship. During the session, the results of the project will be presented, and there will also be time to test the digital platform and explore interaction with participants, collecting their opinions.
“OneAquaHealth and GreenerAge: Together for a more Sustainable Coimbra” aims to present the two projects and encourage discussion among local actors in the city of Coimbra about environmental sustainability and the health of the natural and human ecosystems. This will be an unmissable meeting not only for non-governmental organizations, universities, schools, citizens’ associations, researchers, political decision-makers and companies, but also for any citizen who is enthusiastic about sustainability and defends the health of the planet and its inhabitants.
