Kick-off of Medi-Case | a New Mediterranean Cancer Screening Network

Carina Dantas, CEO of SHINE 2Europe, joined a team of international public health leaders in Brussels on October 24 to mark the launch of the Medi-Case COST Action. Medi-Case is a collaborative effort aimed at strengthening secondary cancer prevention across the Mediterranean region, particularly for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers.

“This is an incredible group of experts, each bringing unique insights and dedication,” said Carina Dantas during the first Management Committee meeting held at the COST Association’s headquarters. “Together, we are setting a foundation for a unified platform in cancer screening and early diagnosis that prioritizes inclusiveness and innovation.”

The Mediterranean region’s cancer burden remains critical, with disparities in cancer control policies among high-income countries and LMICs (low- and middle-income countries) affecting healthcare access and outcomes. Medi-Case responds to this challenge by creating a cohesive research network that will identify priority areas, bridge knowledge gaps, and promote sustainable, evidence-based policies tailored to local needs.

Led by Livia Giordano, Katja Jarm, and Gianluigi Ferrante, this network will foster collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and hands-on training for local professionals and young researchers. Medi-Case also looks forward to exploring synergies with European projects such as Liveration, RadioVal, 4P-CAN, EUonQol, and Cinderella, initiatives in which SHINE and Carina Dantas play an important role, aiming for a comprehensive approach to fighting against cancer in Europe.
