On 7 September, SHINE’s CEO Carina Dantas delivered an online keynote at the Fourth Workshop on Hybrid Human-Machine Learning and Decision Making (HLDM’26), taking place in Naples, Italy.
In the talk “Participatory co-research for ethical excellence in AI-based innovation”, Carina Dantas explored why responsible and trustworthy AI cannot be achieved through technical performance and regulatory compliance alone.
“We need to create meaningful opportunities for people to participate in the design, questioning, development and evaluation of AI-based solutions, bringing lived experience, diverse perspectives and societal values into the innovation process from the outset”, Dantas said.
The CEO was particularly pleased to bring the discussion into practice through examples such as the MAYA Project, TRACE and PATH-IHI Project. Each, in different ways, demonstrates how participation, co-design and engagement can contribute to more ethical, inclusive and person-centred innovation in health and cancer care.
For Carina Dantas “one of the central messages remains clear: human-centred AI is not only about keeping humans “in the loop”. It is about giving people a meaningful voice in shaping the loop itself”.
The HLDM’26 was part of the European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases – ECML PKDD, a flagship European machine learning and data mining conference with a worldwide audience. The conference program includes presentations of peer-reviewed research, invited talks by leaders in the field, a wide program of workshops and tutorials, poster sessions, a discovery challenge, a demo track, an applied data science track, an industry track and a PhD forum.
